What do Members serving in the Healthy Futures Focus Area actually do?
Remember, AmeriCorps service is divided into two categories: Direct Service and Member Development. Below, you’ll find several examples of each. (For Mental Health Counseling Project Criteria, click here.)
Direct Service activities include providing primary and preventive healthcare services, providing dental health screenings or services; providing mental health counseling services, developing treatment plans for patients/clients and participating in staff or team meetings related to patient/client-specific care.
Member Development activities include engaging in professional training and development directed at impacting primary and preventive healthcare; attending healthcare courses that provide additional knowledge, skill building and reflection for direct service activities; peer training; filling out monthly timesheets related to the Compact Service Corps program; and much more!
Where do these Members serve?
Healthy Futures Members serve medically underserved areas and populations, rural communities and among un/underinsured individuals. Nonprofit healthcare facilities located within communities with the medically underserved area or population (MUA/P) designation automatically qualify for the CSC program.
Additionally, nonprofit healthcare facilities located within designated rural or frontier counties automatically qualify for the CSC program. If a nonprofit healthcare facility falls outside of a qualified county, the site itself must qualify by documenting that 50% or more of the clients/patients served by that facility are eligible for Medicare or Medicaid assistance.
All nonprofit healthcare facilities in Arizona, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota qualify for the CSC program because all counties within those states are designated as either MUA/P or rural.
Nonprofit healthcare facilities located in the following counties must serve 50% or more clients/patients eligible for Medicaid assistance:
- CO – Broomfield and Douglas counties
- NE – Seward and Washington counties

How will I know if my service is improving healthcare access?
Each month, all Members MUST track the number of patients/clients to whom preventative or primary healthcare is provided.
