"At the Toledo Community College (high school) in Belize, we were working on building a septic tank. Yet when we got there to begin work, this entire hole was filled with water. Bucket by bucket, we scooped all of the water out, filled it with sand, and leveled it so that by the end of the day they were ready to lay the foundation. This high school of 900 students had only one bathroom. We were happy to make a contribution to this second bathroom for the students. 2012 Service in Action Photo Competition Winners Announced
471 Public Votes Decide Winner, Promote Student Service Projects

Colorado Campus Compact (CCC) is proud to announce the winners of the second annual Service in Action photo contest. Selected by public vote from over forty entries representing over twenty participating colleges and universities, Joel Duke’s compelling image “2 O' Clock Shadow” garnered a majority of the public votes and drew immense support.

As a student teacher, Joel incorporates popular social trends and personalities such as Justin Bieber and Jay-Z into his teaching, enabling the students to enjoy and remain connected to learning. In this picture, a sixth grader solves a surface area math problem using shaving cream on his desk and ends up putting it on his face as well. Although shaving cream has nothing to do with figuring out the surface area, the student now has one more way to relate math to real life.

CCC would like to additionally recognize the second place winner “A Community of Hands for Peace!” by Philip Haberman, from Metropolitan State College of Denver, and third place winner “Befriending the Body” by Molly Pike, from the University of Denver. The annual Service in Action contest recognizes and shares student service projects throughout the Rocky Mountain region.

Story of Service c/o Becky Foster at Mesa District 51 in Grand Junction: "Don’t live life by other people’s standards, by other people’s rules. Prove them wrong,” is the adage that Arminel Estevez lives her life by.

Armi took advantage of an invitation to join AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and joined in its, and her first, year at Central. She quickly found value in the organizational skills the teachers taught her and also in the family that this class created among its members. That girl who works to prove people wrong will be able to take great pride in herself and her accomplishments when she cross the stage in 2011, graduating in the first class of AVID students at CHS. Another motto she lives by: “If you’re on time, you’re late. If you’re early, you’re on time.”

"All three of us belong to an Outdoor Club at NJC. Every spring and fall the club does a highway trash pickup for community service. By doing this we are helping the environment... By doing this highway pickup we are helping all of these problems at least a little bit. And we have fun doing it." Miriam Moller, Northeastern Jr. College

In this picture, this group of students had separated the heart and pinned the structures we have learned in class. Jami and Stephanie congratulate Ronda Monheiser on her award for the 2010 Governor's Service Awards for Outstanding Community Leader of the year! Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. and Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien presided over the ceremony, which recognized individuals for their contribution to volunteerism, community service and civic engagement throughout the State of Colorado. Also recognized, our wonderful partner Elaina Verveer for Outstanding Civic Leader of the year.
