2012 Service in Action Photo Contest Winner Announced
Service in Action Photo Competition Winners Announced
471 Public Votes Decide Winner, Promote Student Service ProjectsColorado Campus Compact (CCC) is proud to announce the winners of the second annual Service in Action photo contest. Selected by public vote from over forty entries representing over twenty participating colleges and universities, Joel Duke’s compelling image “2 O' Clock Shadow” garnered a majority of the public votes and drew immense support.
As a student teacher, Joel incorporates popular social trends and personalities such as Justin Bieber and Jay-Z into his teaching, enabling the students to enjoy and remain connected to learning. In this picture, a sixth grader solves a surface area math problem using shaving cream on his desk and ends up putting it on his face as well. Although shaving cream has nothing to do with figuring out the surface area, the student now has one more way to relate math to real life.
CCC would like to additionally recognize the second place winner “A Community of Hands for Peace!” by Philip Haberman, from Metropolitan State College of Denver, and third place winner “Befriending the Body” by Molly Pike, from the University of Denver. The annual Service in Action contest recognizes and shares student service projects throughout the Rocky Mountain region.
